a dutch settler moves to sumatra in the dutch east indies to start a rubber
farm. from the humble beginnings to the luxurious 20's, when the rubber
market boomed, up to the 'krach' ('crash') at the end of the decennium,
describes not only the lives of the dutch in the indies but also the indonesians
(from sumatra, but also hired labour from java) who came to work on the
farm. the dutch society centres around the 'club' and this is to my idea
the most important feature of the book. mostly written from own experiences
a jewel!
